Our Know-how in Biomass Projects

At our energy from waste plant (MHKW), we have gained extensive experience in using waste-derived fuel, which is very similar to using scrap and dead wood. Today this know-how is being devoted to developing biomass projects.

New biomass powerplants are currently under construction in Mannheim (20 MW), Königs Wusterhausen (20 MW) and Flörsheim-Wicker near Wiesbaden (15 MW). The powerplant in Königs Wusterhausen is scheduled to go into operation by mid-2003. The other two plants should begin operating by the end of 2003. Upon completion of construction, enough electric power can be generated by these three state-of-theart plants, which will be equipped with highly efficient flue-gas treatment systems, to supply approx. 120,000 households using scrap wood — a regrowable resource. Additional biomass projects are under development.

In order to ensure a sufficient supply of fuel, we have been co-operating with local suppliers of scrap and dead wood. They are the partners of our powerplants for the entire 20-year term of the project through firm participation and supply contracts.

As an energy-services provider, we have also realised projects involving biomass heat-only plants in the contracting sector. Following the biomass heat-only plant in Ruhpolding (3.9 MW), which has been supplying district heating since 2000, we have successfully put biomass heat-only plants in Bad Endorf (2 MW) and in Gengenbach (2.7 MW) into operation. The project in Dannenberg is currently under construction. Furthermore, we have been commissioned to conduct additional biomass projects on a contracting basis — not least because of our experience in the district-heating sector.
